In Latvia there are not many dangerous animals. The only dangerous animals are lynxes, foxes, bears and wolves. But I think the most dangerous animals are wolves.
In some parts of the world there are no more wolves living in the wild. But in Latvia there are about 1200 wolves.
Wolves live in little packs. They eat only meat. They hunt roes, elks, deer, wild boars, but there are situations when wolves kill many domestic animals. In 1998 in a small rural community a pack of wolves killed 53 domestic animals.
Every year in all Latvia wolves kill many dogs, sheep, cows, sometimes horses. Wolves chase their prey for hours.
Wolves are fierce, strong but rather timid. They do not attack people. Some scientists say that wolves do a good job killing weak and sick animals. But they may be dangerous and destroy the balance in nature if they overpopulate. In Latvia with every year the number of roes and deer diminish. Zoologists say that for such a small country as Latvia there should be no more than a hundred wolves, only then the balance in nature will be observed.
Like any other animals wolves have the right to live, but their number should be regulated, so that they would not make other species endangered.
