The famous Icelandic house

When people from Scandinavia and the British Isles settled in Iceland in the 9th century they built houses of rock, turf and timber and Icelanders continued to build houses that way until the 20th century. It is believed that a famous Icelandic house at Stöng in the south of Iceland built in the 10th century was devastated in an eruption in the volcano Hekla 1104.
How do we know? We could see a layer of volcano dust covering the ruins when the house was found. A new house (see picture) built 1974 to commemorate 1100 years of living in Iceland was modelled after the ground-layout at Stöng.
